Swim spots
Every official sea bathing water around Ireland, from the EPA, grouped by coast. Dublin’s spots live in Home Waters.
Tides
Times are predictions for the station, in Irish time. Wind and air pressure can shift the real tide by a good bit, and harbours and beaches a few kilometres away can be 10 to 20 minutes different. Tide data © Marine Institute, CC BY 4.0. Loaded to 31 December 2027.
Safety
Ask for the Coast Guard. Don’t go in after them. Throw them something that floats and keep your eyes on them.
Weather
Why your thermometer and the app don't agree
The sea temperature in the app is a reading from out at sea, the same figure the forecasters use. Your thermometer at the steps is reading the water right where you're standing, and that can be a few degrees off either way. Shallow water warms up fast on a sunny afternoon and cools fast on a cold night. Rocks, harbour walls and concrete steps hold the cold through the winter and chill the water right beside them, and in summer they can warm a sheltered corner instead. Rivers and streams bring in colder water, and a fresh tide can swap the whole lot in an hour. Neither reading is wrong; they're measuring different water. Use the app to know what you're getting into, and your own hand (or toe) for what's at the steps today.
For the full detail, these are the ones to check.
Dublin Dippers
A social sea swimming club for No 4 Crew. We swim all year, in all weathers, usually straight after a night shift.
In August 2025 we started heading to the sea as a crew after our nights to shake off the shift. On 16 October 2025, we gave the club its name. We have already gone a full year and all weather.
- Never swim alone. Post the dip, wait for someone to say they’re in.
- Know your way out before you get in.
- Short and often beats long and brave. In winter a few minutes is plenty.
- Warm up before you drive home. Nobody drives while they’re still shivering.
- Everyone’s welcome, fast, slow or just a dip to the shoulders.
